Nicole smiles after earning a $20,000 scholarship to Purdue University. Nicole, whose father died when she was 12, lives with her paternal grandmother. She won enough scholarships to cover four years of tuition.
Nicole's mother Shannon Mulcahy, a steelworker, will travel back and forth to Mexico as her employer Rexnord Bearings moves its operations to the country. Mulcahy will train her replacements.
