With her longtime friend Theresa Pleets, Verna Bailey, at right, walks away from the waters covering the land where her childhood home had stood. Fifty years ago, the Army Corps of Engineers built the Oahu Dam, which flooded both Bailey's and Pleets's childhood homes and displaced hundreds of others.
