Shannon Mulcahy watches as friends and family congratulate her daughter Nicole who won enough scholarships to cover four years of tuition at Purdue University. Nicole, whose father died when she was 12, lives with her paternal grandmother, pictured at left.

Mulcahy, a steelworker, will travel back and forth to Mexico as her employer Rexnord Bearings moves its operations to the country. Mulcahy will train her replacements.
