Shannon Mulcahy, whose years as a steelworker can be seen in her hands, holds a medallion won by her daughter Nicole at a college scholarship night.

Nicole, whose father died when she was 12, lives with her paternal grandmother. She won enough scholarships to cover four years of tuition at Purdue University.

Mulcahy, a steelworker, will travel back and forth to Mexico as her employer Rexnord Bearings moves its operations to the country. Mulcahy will train her replacements.
