WALES, WIS - JANUARY 10:
Patricia Deklotz is a superintendent who has led the transformation of her district, in spite of endless budget tightening, to create a personalized learning “mecca” that attracts 500 – 1,000 edu-visitors a year who want to see how she did it. She has created a place where the children are “in charge” of their own education, while under the watchful eye of teachers who are guides-on-the-side, rather than educators at the front of the room. Her kids are excelling on international tests that compare their performance to those of kids in Finland, Singapore, etc. They are learning about careers, and getting competency-based credentials. Her teachers, too, are gaining ground via “microcredentialing,” whether they learn new skills and get bonuses for it.
