Shannon Mulcahy tears up after her daughter won a $20,000 scholarship to Purdue University. Nicole, whose father died when she was 12, lives with her paternal grandmother. She won enough scholarships to cover four years of tuition.

Mulcahy, a steelworker, will travel back and forth to Mexico as her employer Rexnord Bearings moves its operations to the country. Mulcahy will train her replacements.
